Incidentally, Chicago holds an important place in the history of transportation schedules. It was here that the heads of all the major railroads met in the 1880s to adopt the Standard Time System, still in use today. Previously, time had been established locally based on "high noon," resulting in hundreds of local times, making a mess of regional and national train schedules. Even though the new system was instituted just for the railroads, it was adopted by most states almost immediately and finally officially adopted by the U.S. government almost fifty years later. Transportation systems around the country have been working to be "On Time" ever since. |
